“Murmur” Wei Yi Juan Solo Exhibition
Whether it’s a comedy, tragedy or a mime, little happenings of an artist’s life can form the grounds for creativity and artistic expression. Taking even the smallest of personal experiences, and exploring them in his or her work, some artists seek to resonate with the audience, on the subject matter of humanity, inducing interesting perspectives from the mundane and norms of everyday life.
If the purpose of painting is a recording act, then what’s “written” on the canvas is perhaps a routine dialogue spoken inside the artist’s mind.
Following this trail of thought, the Champochic Gallery shows artist Wei Yi Juan in the gallery’s exhibition debut. Tracing footsteps of the young artist, let us venture into an untypical, work-in-progress “retrospective”.
Selecting works from different periods of Wei’s creations since 2016, this exhibition hopes to formulate a perspective showing Wei’s evolving state of mind and artistic direction. Each work like a slab of brick, lays down the foundations of a path that leads to her style and method as an artist. Metaphorically, let us travel down this thought lane, and get to know the artist from the beginning of the road.
Using a earthy palette, Wei constructs an inner world filled with symbols and icons. In this fictional painted universe, it all begins with the self, then others, and then the emergence of “plains” and other living beings.
A world so surreal, yet derived from the day-to-day of the artist’s life. Personal emotions, nature, death and divinity, working together, like a deep and distant memory.
The “structure” of Wei’s work lean towards surrealism, dreamlike landscape and compositions appearing within. On the other hand, the mood of her brushstroke shows the artist’s inclination for German expressionism, there is heaviness and pain on the soul in her work. Wei’s work is muted yet with tense energy, and the mysterious symbols and icons leave differing interpretations for the audience.
On this occasion, We invite the audience to enter into the world of Wei Yi Juan. Come and engage in this self-dialogue of the artist and also to the opportunity to slow down, stop and pay attention to your “self”.
